Ed Polcer and THE MAGIC OF SWING STREET present a program that's tailored to captivate music lovers of all ages and musical tastes.
This fun evening at the symphony enlivens any season by attracting new audiences: grandparents, bringing their curious grandchildren for the very first time - young people who now dance to swing, and love jazz but are new to the symphony - and all those socially active people looking for a good time.
Program
Ed and his virtuoso band of all-star musicians perform 50 minutes of Classic Jazz standards - a veritable armchair fantasy stroll down Swing Street. This toe-tapping set is followed by a symphony orchestra performance of a jazz-influenced classical composition, or compositions. Finally, the performance culminates with five special arrangements for jazz band and symphony orchestra performing together.
From "Rhapsody in Blue" to "The St. Louis Blues," audiences will enjoy hearing this fresh take on their old favorites. All the selections are interspersed with narrative, humor, and a bit of nostalgia, transporting the audience to the very core of jazz creation.
In addition, Ed Polcer and his Magic of Swing Street all-stars are available to meet with symphony patrons and interested concert-goers at pre-concert receptions and follow-up workshops, where everything from informal meet-the-artist chats to in-depth jazz seminars are possible.
In every way, The Magic of Swing Street Meets the Symphony is a program that brings audiences more in touch with jazz and more in touch with the symphony in a way that's as new and exciting as it is classic and enduring.

- "How can I ever thank you and the All Stars for the fabulous concert? The community is still buzzing!...it turned out to be one of the greatest evenings in the Redlands Symphony's history -- not only was it a full house, but the audience was more enthusiastic than I've ever seen them. From a financial point of view, the concert was more successful than I could have dreamed."

- "The bright moments of the program are difficult to list because we would have to discuss every song of the two-hour program solo by solo. Demonstrating some of the best of what is America. Harriet Beecher Stowe's reflection on American music, [A grand and wild freedom that well expresses the heart of a people...]. This is what we heard.
Richard E. Campbell, Pine Bluff Commercial

- "The combination is a successful way to expand and build the symphony audience. ...This year's symphony season subscribers elected to add on this jazz program, so there was room for many jazz lovers to get a taste of the full orchestra sound."
